COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (RV) Omaha's first hockey road trip of the season was a rousing success as the Mavericks completed a series sweep.
Omaha scored five goals in the final 23 minutes as the Mavs outlasted No. 15 Colorado College 5-4 Saturday night in Colorado Springs.
The game featured three ties before
Sean Tschigerl put Omaha ahead for good with 4:14 left.
Jacob Guévin added an empty-netter with 1:55 left for a 5-3 lead before holding on for the victory.
Omaha (4-2) also won the opener Friday 3-2 when
Simon Latkoczy finished with 49 saves.
Dawson Cowan, making his first start in goal this season, got Saturday's victory as he made 36 saves. He had at least 10 saves in each period.
Cowan kept Colorado College scoreless in the opening period when he made 13 saves. Both teams killed off a pair of power plays before Colorado scored an even-strength goal midway through the second period for the initial lead.
But in a two-minute span late in the second period, Omaha not only caught Colorado College but moved in front.
First,
Luke Woodworth tied it by converting a scoring chance in front of the net with 2:48 left in the period.
Then at the 1:07 mark,
Maxime Pellerin gave the Mavericks the lead. His fifth goal of the season when his one-timer went over the shoulder of goalie Kaidan Mbereko to find the back of the net.
The teams continued to trade goals in the third period.
Colorado College responded with a tying goal less than two minutes into the third period. Woodworth once again put Omaha in front with a goal with 8:24 left before Colorado College tied it at the 4:49 left.
But 35 seconds later, Tschigerl put Omaha in front for good, then Guevin added insurance down the stretch.
Tschigerl and Pellerin each had a goal and an assist to lead the Omaha offense.
