COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A pair of
Tyler Rollwagen goals and another standout performance in goal from
Simon Latkoczy carried (RV) Omaha Hockey to a 3-2 win over No. 15 Colorado College in the NCHC opener on Friday night in Colorado Springs, Colo.
It was the first road game of the season for the Mavericks (3-2) and also marked the third win over a ranked opponent during five games.
"It was a great, hard-fought win for the team," said head coach
Mike Gabinet. "Our special teams were outstanding tonight."
Latkoczy finished with 49 saves as he made sure Omaha never trailed Friday.
Colorado College outshot Omaha 30-4 through the first 14 minutes, but Latkoczy kept the game scoreless with 16 saves in those 14 minutes. The game was scoreless through one period as Omaha killed off a power-play chance.
Omaha immediately took advantage of its power-play opportunity as Rollwagen scored 31 seconds into the second period. He redirected a pass in front of the net from
Griffin Ludtke and
Luke Woodworth. It was Ludtke's team-best fifth assist of the season.
Omaha then turned away another power-play chance before Colorado College tied it with 6:41 left in the second period with an even-strength goal.
But Rollwagen put the Mavs back in front just before the second intermission. He took a pass in front of the net and beat goalie Kaidan Mbereko with 12 seconds left in the period.
Marcus Nguyen added an insurance goal, an empty-netter with 1:38 left, and the Mavs needed that insurance as Colorado College scored with 39 seconds left.
Latkoczy, who was started all games this season for Omaha, then kept it right there as the Mavericks earned three points in its road debut.
The series concludes Saturday at 7 p.m. CT on NCHC.tv.
