Freshman Nathan Frette breaks school record in 1M and 3M

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving returned home to H&K Pool Saturday, competing against Rockhurst. Both the men's and women's team secured wins over the Hawks.

The men's team secured 159 points over Rockhurst, which tallied 79. After opening his collegiate career yesterday against South Dakota State with a record in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 322.15, freshman Nathan Frette (Lake Buena Vist, FL) beat yesterday's mark this afternoon mark with a score of 356.90. Frette also broke the school record in the 3-meter diving event, recording 357.35. Both scores are NCAA Zone Qualifiers.

Along with Frette, freshman Owen Kipp delivered a NCAA Zone Qualifying mark of 339.95 in the men's 3-meter diving event, placing second. Junior Kyle Kulow (Sugar Land, Texas) and senior Stefan Varga (Stockholm, Sweden) also delivered strong performances earning two first place finishes on the day. Kulow took first in the 200 and 500 free, while Varga notched first in the 400-meter relay and the 100 back.

The women's team defeated Rockhurst 167-68. Freshman Mia Jacobs (Olathe, Kan.) and junior Julia Thomas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the way with two first place finishes apiece in the 200 free, 100 fly and 100 free.

Overall, the men delivered 23 podium finishes and the women notched 27.

"After having a high-energy meet yesterday, I was very impressed with the level of swimming and diving our team put forth today," said head coach Jessica Hessel. "There was some high level swimming and diving going on in just our first weekend of competing. Hats off to this group. We have a great culture and they love being around each other. These results reflect who they are in and out of the pool."

"I'm impressed with how the divers have approached getting ready for the season and it showed in their performances," said diving coach Eric Sprague. "Seeing our men and women sweep the diving events against South Dakota State in Lincoln on Friday was a great way to start the season. Congrats to Ava Snyder for diving composed and picking up the victory on both boards Friday against SDSU. Our women spread out the victories with Bella and Holly splitting event wins Saturday. Owen Kipp showed he still has his momentum from the end of last season with his 3-meter win Friday and then he secured his zone qualifying scores on both boards Saturday. Nathan Frette made an impressive debut this season with his win and school record performance on 1-meter Friday. Nathan then turned around and upped the record Saturday, as well as setting the 3-meter record.  Stone, Brecken and Will provided great depth helping secure third-place finishes in all the events. We know where we need to focus over the next week and we're excited to host Iowa Western Friday."
