OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman forward
Joel Plante (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) scored 33 seconds into overtime to give Omaha a 3-2 exhibition win over Air Force on Friday night on Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena.
Omaha led 2-0 before Air Force scored twice in the final 12 minutes of regulation. The Falcons kept pressure on the Mavs in the closing minutes of regulation before Plante, making his Omaha debut, scored in the opening seconds of overtime.
Plante is one of 15 newcomers on Omaha's 26-man roster. Mav newcomers accounted for two goals and four assists on the night.
Omaha led most of the night as it scored in each of the first two periods.
Thirty-six seconds after the Mavericks killed off a two-minute penalty, senior defenseman and Menke Family Captain
Griffin Ludtke (Elko, Minn.) tipped in a pass from freshman center
Luke Woodworth (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada) for the season's first goal with 6:55 left in the first period. Ludtke had two goals last season while playing in every game for Omaha.
The Mavericks took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission as senior goaltender
Simon Latkoczy (Trencin, Slovakia), the NCHC goaltender of the year last season, was sharp in goal.
He had eight saves in the first period, and that included a pair of stops on point-blank attempts by the Falcons. Latkoczy also came up with five saves in the first seven minutes of the second period before freshman
Dawson Cowan (Warren, Manitoba, Canada) finished the night in net for the Mavs.
A trio of newcomers combined for Omaha's goal in the second period.
Sophomore forward
Brett Hyland (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) poked home a pass in front of the net with four minutes left in the second period. Woodworth and Jeremy Loranger earned assists on that goal.
The Mavs maintained a shutout before Chris Hedden's one-timer put Air Force on the board with 11:16 left. Cowan had seven saves in the next eight minutes before Oliver Genest tied it at the 3:02 mark.
Cowan had 18 saves for Omaha, which was outshot 33-29.
