Volleyball sweeps North Dakota

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Volleyball swept North Dakota, 3-0, in the conference home opener Thursday night at Baxter Arena.
 
The Mavericks (4-8, 1-2 Summit League) came out swinging against the Fighting Hawks (3-5, 1-2) with a 25-20 win in the first set. The second set brought some back-and-forth with 10 tie scores and four lead changes, but the Mavs pulled through with a 25-23 win. Omaha did not start holding back in the third and was able to seal the match with a 25-14 win.
 
Omaha finished the match with an attack percentage of .350 compared to North Dakota's .118. Omaha also tallied 43 kills with seven aces and 10 total blocks while the Fighting Hawks recorded 32 kills, two aces and three total blocks. Of the six Mavericks who had multiple offensive attempts, all six finished with a hitting percentage equal or greater than .308.
 
Senior Kali Jurgensmeier (Wahoo, Neb.) and freshman Faith Venable (Lincoln, Neb.) split offensive duties against the Fighting Hawks. Both Mavs recorded 11 kills apiece. Venable also secured four aces.
 
The Summit League leader in assisted blocks put on a show as she fights to stay atop the conference standings. Junior Emily Huss (Fairbury, Neb.) tallied seven assisted blocks. It was her second most in a match so far this season. Jurgensmeier had the second most of the team with four.
 
Tonight's win was sweeter for Omaha assistant coach Kyle Breitbarth whose younger brother is in his first year as an assistant for North Dakota.
