Box Score TULSA, Okla. - In their second match in as many days, the Mavericks nearly picked up their first win of the season, holding an early lead but ultimately falling just short of taking the day as they were bested 4-3 at Tulsa.
"It's obviously tough to lose a match 4-3, especially against such a high-quality opponent like Tulsa, but the positives far outweighed the negatives today," remarked Head Coach Hunter Clark.
After falling in the first two doubles matches to begin the morning,
Mikhail Korkunov and
Bryan Kuntz notched the first win for Omaha as they edged out their opponents 7-5.
Down 1-0 heading into singles play. Korkunov got things started with his first individual win of the season as he bested Will Pellegrini in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Omaha then took a 2-1 lead on the day when
Jacob Dubas cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Later, tied at 2-2, the Mavericks got their third and final win as
Ethan Gaubert put them back in front with a close 6-4, 6-4 performance.
Omaha dropped the next two matches as both teams sat tied at 3-3. It all came down to the final singles match between
Christian Trevey and Gus Tettamble. Things were as close as they could get as both sets went to tiebreakers, but in the end it was Tettamble who held on both times to narrowly take the set and the day 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3).
"I'm super proud of our fight on all courts and the guys are hungry for our next match," concluded Clark.
