OMAHA, Neb. - In a rematch of last year's Summit League Championship Final, the Mavericks were unable to come out on top against South Dakota State as they were downed 4-1 today.
Omaha has lost just its second match of the season and its first at home as the team moves to 0-1-1 in league play and 6-2-3 overall. As for the Jackrabbits, they are open conference play at 1-0-0 and are now 8-2-1 on the year.
How it Happened
- While each team took five shots in the first half, the Jackrabbits were the only ones to find the back of the net, scoring their first goal in just the fourth minute, before closing out the half with the second goal in the 41st minute.
- The Mavericks came out aggressive in the second half, scoring just over a minute in after Lauren Schmidt sent a deep pass to Marissa Gohr in the corner where she quickly crossed to Lindsey Birch who headed it in right in front of the goalie. This was Birch's first goal of the season as she came into the game at the start of the half.
- This was as close as Omaha would get, however, as SDSU came right back and made it 3-1 a minute later, before scoring their fourth and final goal with 40 seconds remaining.
Inside the Box
- Birch's goal was the second of her career and her first since October 16, 2022 vs. Western Illinois.
- Today marks the first time this season the Mavericks allowed more than one goal in a game.
