Mavericks Blank Coyotes to Claim First Conference Win

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Mavericks picked up their first Summit League victory of the season tonight as they held South Dakota to just two shots on goal in a 1-0 win.

With its first conference win secured, Omaha is now 1-1-1 in league play and 7-2-3 overall, tying the win total of the 2023 squad. As for the Coyotes, they slide to 0-1-1 with a 2-6-3 overall record.

How it Happened

  • Omaha's defense came out and showed once again why its the best in the league as the unit led by Regan Zimmers only allowed a single shot that missed high in the entire first half. The Mavericks offense, while also kept off the scoreboard, kept up a consistent attack with six shots (three on goal) in the first half.
  • It was not until 65:36 that the Coyotes managed their first shot on goal, only for it to be stopped by Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen. Three minutes later, Alyssa Kellar came through with another clutch, late-game goal as she jumped in front of goal and tipped in a pass from Lauren Schmidt to break the stalemate.
  • In the 86th minute, it seemed as though USD tied the game late after Reedtz made the initial save off the corner kick but could not corral the loose ball, leading to what seemed to be a Coyote goal. After review, though, South Dakota was called offsides and the Mavericks were able to hold on to the lead.

Inside the Box

  • The two shots on goal allowed by Omaha tonight are the fewest the team has allowed since last year's conference championship match against South Dakota State (2). Two games before that, the Mavericks held South Dakota to only one shot on goal in the opening round of the tournament.
  • Kellar has now has five goals on the season, tying her total from last year.
  • For the second time in her five-year career, Mia has reached five wins in a single season, sitting just one win short of her career high of six set back in her rookie season.
