Mavericks Score Twice in Final 18 Minutes to Top Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah. - After trailing 1-0 for nearly the entire match, the Mavericks came back and scored twice in the final 18 minutes to best Southern Utah 2-1 to open their road trip.

Omaha moves into 2-0-1 on the season, while the Thunderbirds will continue to look for their first win as they drop to 0-3-0. The Mavericks improve to 3-0 all-time against Southern Utah.

How it Happened

  • The Thunderbirds' first shot on goal proved to be their only one to get past Maja Baun. After allowing the Southern Utah goal in the sixth minute, the freshman, making her first ever start, was flawless the rest of the evening, stopping five more shots including three within the first 21 minutes of the second half.
  • After going 0-for-5 on scoring attempts through the first 50, the Mavericks only needed two more shots the rest of the match to pull off the comeback. The first came at 72:11 when Keara Chaffee managed to keep the ball in bounds and delivered a perfect pass right in front of Marissa Gohr in the goal box where she blasted one up the middle to make it 1-1.
  • 10 minutes later, it was Gohr's turn to set up the play as she passed it to Alyssa Kellar in the box where she narrowly avoided a collision with a Southern Utah defender who ended up knocking down the goalie and allowing her to score the deciding goal.

Inside the Box

  • Through her first three matches and 180 minutes of playing time, Baun has only allowed one goal while making eight saves.
  • With her assist tonight, Gohr now has three on the season, setting a new career high just three matches in. She also reached 25 career points.
  • Kellar is the first Maverick this season to record a second goal.
  • Chaffee's assist was the first of her career after not recording one in 11 matches last season.
