Mavericks Tie SIUE on Opening Day

Omaha, Neb.- The Mavericks fought to a standstill on opening day as they began their 2024 campaign with a 1-1 tie vs. SIUE.

Omaha opens the season at 0-0-1

How it Happened 

  • Veteran goalkeeper Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen was tested early as she made a diving save two and a half minutes into the match before quickly corralling an SIUE cross attempt off the rebound.

  • In the 33rd minute, the Cougars broke the stalemate on a goal from MaryClaire Imig off of a free kick.

  • Only 11 minutes into the second half, Omaha evened the score 1-1 as Reagan Bourgeois came up for a free kick and fed a pass directly to Regan Zimmers who sent the one-timer right up the middle of the goal. 

  • After subbing in at the start of the second half, rookie goalkeeper Maja Baun went up high and made her first career save at 76:12.

  • The Cougars had three more shot attempts over the final 15 minutes of the match, while the Mavericks got one last chance to score with less than two minutes left on another shot from Zimmers.
     

Inside the Box 

  • For Zimmers, this marked the first time in her career that she scored a goal on opening day. The defender now has five in her career.
  • Likewise, Bourgeois' assist was also the fifth of her career.
  • In goal, Reedtz and Baun combined for three saves.
  • Omaha outshot SIUE 10-9, while both teams were tied with four shots on goal.
  • In addition to Baun, Blanche Brethes Vacchiani and Sammie Edwards both made their career debuts tonight, playing 58 and 17 minutes, respectively.
  • With her 79th career start tonight, Grace Ostergaard has officially set the record for the most starts by a Maverick in the Division I era.

The Mavericks continue opening weekend on Sunday when they host Lindenwood for a 1 p.m. match at Caniglia Field.
