OMAHA, Neb. - In the opening game of their final home series of the season, the Mavericks dropped game one to first place St. Thomas 11-2 Friday night.
Omaha, still sitting in second place in the Summit League, is 15-27-1 with a 13-11-1 record in league play. As for the Tommies, they improve to 19-22 with a 13-8 league record.
Innings 1-3
For the 21st time this season, the Mavericks were on the board first as
Jackson Trout clubbed one to deep center to easily bring home
Matt Goetzmann on the sacrifice in the bottom of the first.
Following a 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts from
Caleb Riedel, however, St. Thomas pulled ahead 3-1 off two home runs in the second, before adding another two in the third.
Innings 4-6
Riedel rebounded in the fourth, retiring the side with his sixth and seventh strikeouts of the night. After the Tommies got another run in the top of the fifth, the Mavericks nearly got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when
Henry Zipay hit a lead-off double to dead center that came mere inches short of a homer, but the next three batters were unable to bring him home.
Innings 7-9
The Tommies scored five more runs over the next three innings, while Omaha only managed to get one more run in the bottom of the seventh as
Zach Lechnir and Zipay drew back-to-back walks, allowing
Drew Lechnir to punch one through the left side and bring his brother home.
Inside the Box Score
With eight strikeouts on the day, Riedel now has 195 in his career and one more start left in the regular season, plus the Summit League Tournament. He would become just the third Mavericks pitcher in the Division I era to reach the 200 strikeout mark.
