OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks bounced back after yesterday's loss as they quickly took the lead in the first and never looked back as they beat St. Thomas 10-6.
Since North Dakota State also won tonight, Omaha is now third in the Summit League Standings at 16-27-1 with a 14-11-1 conference record, putting them slightly behind second-place NDSU (18-25-1, 13-9-1). The Tommies will maintain a slim lead for first at 19-23 overall and 13-9 in league play.
Today was also Alumni Day at Tal Anderson Field, with the 2007 CWS team being honored with a pregame ceremony and throughout the game.
Innings 1-3
After the Tommies scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Mavericks promptly responded with a four spot in the bottom of the inning as
Jackson Trout ripped an RBI double down the line, followed by back-to-back home runs from
Noah Greise and
Henry Zipay to put Omaha up for good.
The next inning, Omaha got another run as
Cardel Dick got into a run down and bought time for
Trent Burkhalter to score before the final out was made. Then, in the third, Zipay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.
Zach Lechnir would drive in the seventh Maverick run of the day after lining one of the pitcher's foot to bring home Trout.
Innings 4-6
Kreiling, who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third, did it again in the top of the fourth as he struck out his seventh batter to end the inning. The Tommies tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a home run from Joe Vos. The Mavericks responded in the bottom of the inning by loaded the bases for
Cardel Dick who got one just over the center fielder's head for his first career triple to make it 10-3.
Kreiling ended his final career start at Tal Anderson Field with a scoreless sixth, striking out his ninth and 10th batters of the night for a new season high.
Innings 7-9
The Tommies managed to score one run each in the next three innings to cut Omaha's lead to 10-6, but by then it was too little too late as
Joe Hackmann completed his third inning of work to secure the win.
Inside the Box Score
This was Kreiling's third career game with double-digit strikeouts.
For Hackmann, this is his second save of the season, with his first also being a three-inning outing at Northern Colorado back in March.
