West Lafayette, Ind.- The Omaha Mavericks picked up their second Power 5 victory after defeating the Purdue Boilermakers 4-3. The Mavericks made some crucial defensive plays to keep the Boilermakers to just three.
The Mavericks improve to a 19-7 overall record on the campaign and extend their winning streak to eight.
Game One: Omaha 4, Purdue 3
How It Happened
• Purdue got the scoring started in the bottom of the third. With bases loaded, the Purdue batter was hit by a pitch to advance the runners and take the lead 1-0.
• In the top of the fifth,
Maggie O'Brien hit a double to right center to tie the game up at one and advance
Lynsey Tucker to third.
• With Tucker of third,
Sydney Thomason hit a sacrifice fly to center putting the Mavericks up 2-1.
• Purdue tied it back up at two with a single up the right-field line in the bottom of the fifth.
• In the top of the seventh, O'Brien attempted to steal making the catcher throw down to second. O'Brien went back to first with the second baseman following her trying to make the tag. With the focus on O'Brien Tucker stole home to make it 3-2.
• Up next was Thomason who hit one between the left-center gap. With a deep hit to the wall, O'Brien made her way home from first, putting Omaha up 4-2 in the top of the seventh.
• In the bottom of the seventh, Purdue hit a triple to center and recorded their third run, making it a one-run game.
• On a passed ball that went down the third base line,
Sydney Ross backhanded the ball to
Kamryn Meyer who tagged the runner out at home. Initially, the runner was called safe but after not touching the plate she was called out.
Game Notes
• Tucker went 3-for-4 at-bat where she scored two runs and stole one base.
• Thomason went 1-for-3 and recorded two RBIs.
• Meyer pitched the complete seven innings and threw nine strikeouts.
• The Mavericks outhit Purdue 11-6 and made zero errors for the fifth game in a row.
