CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Omaha softball team swept opening-day action with a 4-1 win over Butler and an 8-0 win in six innings over Drake. Freshman
Sammy Schmidt had quite the collegiate debut with 3 RBIs, two hits, one run, and one triple. Against Drake,
Sydney Ross accounted for four RBIs in three at-bats and
Maggie O'Brien scored three runs with three at-bats.
The Mavericks, for the second season in a row, have opened the season 2-0.
Game One: Omaha 4, Butler 1
How It Happened

Kamryn Meyer quickly shut down the first three batters in the bottom of the first with two strikeouts and caught a pop-up in front of the plate.
- Omaha scored their first run in the second after Schmidt sent a line drive to center, sending Ross home.
- Meyer had another one-two-three strikeout in the second.
- Schmidt tripled a line drive to center, sending Ross home.
- Meyer's no-hitter ended in the fourth after allowing only one hit.
- Butler scored a home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1.
- O'Brien's sacrifice hit to center allowed Cramer to tag up and score the Maverick's fourth run.
- The Maverick's defense finished the game strong with a double play that got the runners out at second and first.

Game Two: Omaha 8, Drake 0 (6 innings)
How It Happened
- Omaha wasted no time putting up two runs in the first. Ross singled to left center, sending Thomason and O'Brien to score.
- The Maverick's defense notched another double play in the top of the third to secure the second and third outs.
- Omaha had another double play in the top of the fourth for a quick defensive inning.
- The Mavericks came out hot in the fifth. O'Brien opened with a single, followed by Thomason finding second on a ground-rule which placed O'Brien on third.
Emma Durr's hit allowed Thomason to advance to third and O'Brien to score the third run.
- With the rolling momentum, Durr stole second for the first time this season.
- Ross was next at-bat, who took the walk to load the bases with no outs. Olson's sacrifice hit brought in Durr and Thomason and advanced Ross to third.
- Omaha kept it rolling with the next at-bat. Schmidt grounded out to shortstop but sent Ross home for the sixth Omaha run.
- At the bottom of the sixth, bases were loaded with O'Brien on second and Tucker on third. Ross grounded a hit to third but Drake's third baseman overthrew the ball allowing Tucker and O'Brien to score.
- With eight runs unanswered in the sixth, the ball game came to a close, and the Mavericks picked up the sweep.
Game Notes
Sydney Nuismer pitched the full game for her first win of the season. She made one strikeout, while only allowing one walk, and five hits.
- O'Brien scored a career-high three runs and had a career-high six assists.
- The Mavericks had 10 total runs
- With no errors on the day, Drake was unable to score a single run.
