Mavericks Down Creighton to Extend Win Streak to Eight

Feb 25, 2024

Box Score The Omaha Mavericks Men's Tennis squad continues to roll after defeating intracity rival Creighton, 4-3.

The Mavericks trailed 3-1 before starting their comeback run. Creighton took the early lead after winning the doubles point.

In singles, the Mavericks got wins in the 1, 2, 3 and 5 spots last night from Mikhail Korkunov, Ryoma Mishiro, Quintan Van Wijk and Ethan Gaubert. All four Mavericks won in straight sets.

Coming back to tie the match at 3-3, Mishiro was tasked with grabbing the clincher and he did just that. The Fujisawa, Japan native took the final match 6-4, 7-6 to give the Mavericks their 10th victory of the season.

"So much I could say about the match, but overall super proud of our guys and their resilience tonight," head coach Matt Barlow said. " At 1-3 down it was nice to have Korkunov and Gaubert reel off a couple straight set wins to get us back to 3-3. And then our guy, Ryoma Mishiro. The dude woke up with a 104 degree fever yesterday, didn't practice, and showed up today and played so tough. He deserves this moment. Super happy for the guys to win their eighth straight at home in front of a big crowd. We will enjoy this one for a couple days and then get ready for our tough Illinois trip next weekend."

Omaha will hop on the road later this week to battle Illinois State on Friday and Northern Illinois on Saturday.
