KANSAS CITY - #2 Omaha volleyball's semifinal matchup in the 2024 Summit League Championship is confirmed following #3 South Dakota's three-set sweep of #6 Kansas City, the host of this year's championship. The Coyotes toppled the Roos 25-11, 25-19 and 25-15 in Sunday evening's first round matchup.
The Mavericks and Coyotes will square-off on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. CT at the Swinney Center in Kansas City. The semifinal bout will air on the Summit League Network.
2024 marks Omaha's eight-consecutive Summit League tournament and 10th all-time since the Mavericks joined the conference in 2012. Led by head coach
Matt Buttermore, Omaha enters the championship as the defending tournament champions having clinched the program's first Summit League title a season ago, resulting in the Mavericks' first NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship appearance. Of note, the two-seed in the Summit League tournament has gone on to win four of the last six titles, including last year's Omaha squad which defeated #1 Kansas City in five sets on Nov. 21, 2023.
Omaha is 9-8 all-time in Summit League postseason play.
Ending the regular season 16-11 with a 14-2 mark in-conference, Omaha arrives in Kansas City having won five-straight conference contests and 11 of the team's last 12 games played. Omaha's only two league setbacks were to regular season champion South Dakota State, the top seed in the tournament.
During the regular season, Omaha swept the season series with semifinal opponent South Dakota –– both in four sets –– first in Vermillion, S.D. on Oct. 5 and at Baxter Arena on Senior Night to close-out the home slate on Nov. 16.
The Mavericks only went to a fifth and deciding set once in conference play this season, a 3-2 victory at Denver (Oct. 17).
Three student-athletes earned postseason honors from this year's Maverick squad with
Kali Jurgensmeier (OH/Wahoo, Neb./Bishop Neumann) and
McKenna Ruch (MB/Omaha, Neb./Millard North) earning All-League Team honors and
Shayla McCormick (OH/Omaha, Neb./Omaha Skutt Catholic) earning a Honorable Mention All-Summit League nod. With 455 career total blocks, Ruch, the MVP of last season's Summit League tournament, is tied for seventh all-time in Summit League history.
A win against #3 South Dakota would lead to a championship final matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. CT against #1 South Dakota State or #5 Denver. Omaha has appeared in five Summit League finals as the Mavericks seek their fourth-straight title match appearance and sixth all-time.
