OMAHA, Neb. - No. 15 Omaha hockey fell to No. 10 Wisconsin 3-2 in a thrilling overtime exhibition at Baxter Arena Saturday. Prior to the game, the rink at Baxter Arena was dedicated to longtime coach and administrator Mike Kemp in a ceremony featuring Kemp's family, donors, Omaha hockey alumni and University leadership.
Omaha's special teams shined in the tune-up game killing two Badger power plays in the opening period.
Mike Gabinet's side held Wisconsin scoreless in four power play opportunities as Maverick goaltending stopped eight shots on the man-advantage. The Mavericks fended off two 3-on-5 situations in the overtime battle.
Tyler Rollwagen scored two goals for the Mavericks with assists from
Jacob Guevin,
Harrison Israels and
Dylan Gratton. Israels won 9-of-16 faceoffs.
Simon Latkoczy was a force to be reckoned with between the pipes for Omaha making 16 stops in 16 shots faced in just over a period and a half of action. Freshman
Kevin Reidler made 19 stops in net.
Quinn Finley scored the game-winner for the Badgers in overtime to cement the exhibition win.
Omaha hockey begins the regular season in Las Vegas on Friday, Oct. 11, in the Ice Breaker Tournament to face UMass at the Orleans Arena.
