Omaha, Neb. - Maverick volleyball enjoyed a strong home showing with 1,411 fans at Baxter Arena as Omaha (11-11, 9-2 Summit) took-on an undefeated (RV) South Dakota State squad (21-0, 10-0 Summit) in a four-set Halloween night showdown, won by the Jackrabbits 3-1.
The Mavericks started out strong in the first set and had the Jackrabbits chasing their tails until a series of attack errors by the Mavericks gave SDSU the opportunity to win the set (25-18).
The Mavericks again led the Jackrabbits in the second set. An incredible eight serves and two aces by defensive specialist
Makayla Tiahrt and kills by her fellow teammates gave the Mavericks a monumental lead. The Mavericks won the second set (25-12).
The third and fourth set started out in favor of SDSU. The Mavericks were able to maintain a close lead with the Jackrabbits throughout the third set. However, a six-point run by the Jackrabbits gave them a strong lead against the Mavericks and ultimately won the set (25-20).
The Jackrabbits went on another six-point run in the fourth set before the Mavericks were able to secure a point with a kill by
Kali Jurgensmeier. However, it wasn't enough as the Jackrabbits were able to close out the set (25-16).
Jurgensmeier led the team with an impressive 17 kills overall. Fellow outside hitter
Shayla McCormick followed closely behind with 11 kills. Sophomore setter
Ivy Leuck led the team with 29 assists.
The Mavericks will face off next against St. Thomas at Schoenecker Arena on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. CT. The match will be available to stream on the Summit League Network. Tickets are available for remaining home matches at
