Mavericks Fall to the Roos After Late Comeback

Kansas City, MO. - The Omaha Mavericks fall 88-74 to the Kansas City Roos. 
 
Omaha falls to a 4-15 overall on the season and 0-6 in conference play. 

Leaders For Omaha
Omaha was paced by Kennedi Grant with 21 points who went 6-of-12 from the field and 9-of-14 on the free throw line. Also double-digits was Grace Cave with 13 points (5-of-11) and Katie Keitges with 11 (4-of-5). Grant led in rebounds with nine, just one shy of a double-double. Cave led the Mavericks in assists with eight. 
 
Leaders for South Dakota State
Four different Roos had double-digit games, paced by Dominique Phillips 23 points. Phillips also led in rebounds with eight. Alayna Countreras had a team high eight assists. 

Team Stats
Omaha was outshot 48.1% (26-of-54) to 55.7% (34-of-61) from the field goal range. The Mavericks were also outshot on threes going 33.3% (5-of-15) to 45.5% (5-of-11). Omaha led the free throw category going 65.4% (17-of-26) to 50% (15-of-30).

Inside the First Quarter
The Mavericks had a good start as Katie Keitges got an early three at 8:46 to take the lead 3-3. After getting behind by seven, the Mavericks had back-to-back buckets for five point and got within two of the Roo. A final layup by Grace Cave put the Mavericks within seven at the end of the first quarter. 

Taking the lead early with a layup, the Roos only gave up the lead once after a three-pointer by Omaha. They quickly took the lead back with a six point scoring run. The Roos had another run scoring of another five straight points to get up 18-10 over the Mavericks. After a strong offensive quarter, Kansas City lead at the end of the quarter 29-22.

Inside the Second Quarter
Ana Nikulochkina got the second started with a driving layup assisted by Cave. With an and one on the layup A. Nikulochkina sunk a free throw to get the Mavericks within five. A final pair of free throws with 12 seconds left Grant sunk two to get Omaha to 38 points. 

While the Roos didn't didn't score another 29 points, they still had a strong quarter to up their total to 46 at the end of the half. The Roos made 8-of-15 shots in the second for a .533 shot percent from the field. The Roos found trouble with turnovers, making four in the second. 

Inside the Third Quarter
Omaha's Morgan Gardner had a strong start to the half making a jumper outside the paint at 9:48. A steal by Keitges was followed by a half-court pass by Cave to Stanley who made a quick layup. On the next Roo possession, Omaha got the rebound and Cave made another deep half-court pass to Stanley who sank a three. The Mavericks were quickly back within six of the Roos.

Kansas City responded in the opening minute of the second half with a three-pointer. Within the first four minutes, the Roos racked up 13 points to put them up 56-43. After that run, KC gave up seven straight points to the Mavericks. At the end of the third, the Mavericks down only down 62-59.

Inside the Fourth Quarter
Keitges sunk a huge three at 6:24 to give the Mavericks a momentum boost after their foul trouble earlier in the quarter. The Mavericks were called for 11 personal fouls and only drew three. Grant put eight of the 15 points in the fourth going 4-of-4 from the free throw line. The Mavericks fought in the fourth to get possession back to even the score but just couldn't find their stride. 

KC was graced we a handful of foul calls in their favor. With 14 free throw attempts, the Roos scored eight points from the line. They went 9-of-12 from the field for a total 26 points in the fourth quarter. They found possession of the ball so much from Omaha's seven turnovers in addition to the fouls drawn. With another 26 points under their belt, Kansas City closed the game 88-74.

The Mavericks will return home to Baxter to compete against Oral Roberts on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
