The No. 5 Denver Pioneers got the best of the No. 19 Omaha Mavericks this evening as Omaha fell in tonight's series opener, 6-2.
The Mavericks struck first tonight after
Zach Urdahl buried a penalty shot goal 7:18 into the first period. Denver would go on to tie things at 1-1 almost exactly 10 minutes later.
All even after 20 minutes of play, DU took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to take a 2-1 lead, 1:38 into period two. On the power play,
Ty Mueller blasted home his team leading eighth goal of the season with 11:27 left in the second frame.
With 5:23 left in the second period, Denver scored their first of three goals in a span of 2:56. The Pioneers added their sixth goal of the game 2:17 into the third period.
Jesse Lansdell potted his second goal of the campaign with 9:19 left in regulation on the power play. Omaha won the draw back to the point and perfectly crashed the night taking only 11 seconds off the man advantage.
Omaha and Denver will do it all again tomorrow night in the series finale from Baxter Arena. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m.
