Mavericks Begin Conference Play With Win Over Fighting Hawks

Grand Forks, N.D.— The Mavericks picked up three points as they began Summit League play with a 2-0 victory over the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota on Thursday in Grand Forks, N.D.

Omaha's record moves to 4-3-2 overall as they start off 1-0-0 in the Summit League.

How it Happened

  • The Mavericks took the ball from the opening kickoff and held possession almost the entire first half.

  • Alyssa Kellar had a great chance at a goal in the 10th minute. Fighting Hawks' goalkeeper Madi Livingston was able to get a piece of the ball as it glanced off of her hand, hit the post and stayed out of the net.

  • Over the next 20 minutes, Omaha would continue to build pressure as Sophia Green and Reagan Bourgeois got shots off.

  • In the 41st minute, Keara Chaffee had a great run down the sideline in the attacking third. Chaffee crossed the ball for Birch in the box, but it was deflected into the net by a Fighting Hawk to give the Mavericks the lead at the half. (1-0)

  • Out of the break, Regan Zimmers collected the ball in front of Konsmo's goal box. She connected with Sophia Green on a 50-yard pass that gave Green a clean look from just outside the box. Green placed it past the outstretched glove of Livingston for her Summit League-leading seventh goal of the season. Grace Ostergaard picked up a secondary assist on the 54th-minute goal from Green.

  • The Maverick defense was solid all day en route to their fourth shutout of the season. They allowed the first Fighting Hawks' shot in the 57th minute, and Emma Konsmo made her first save in the 71st minute.

  • Konsmo made two more saves in the 82nd and 87th minutes. She completed her fourth clean sheet of the season with three saves.

Inside the Box

  • Omaha narrowly outshot North Dakota 9-8. The Mavericks and Fighting Hawks were even with three shots on goal each.

  • Sophia Green scored the 21st goal of her career and now has 50 points as a Maverick. Green stands alone as Omaha's Division I era record holder for goals and points in a career.

  • Green scored her career-high seventh goal this year and leads the Summit League with 16 points. Green totaled six goals in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.

  • Grace Ostergaard picked up her first assist of the season on Green's goal.

  • Emma Konsmo made three saves in her fourth clean sheet of the season.

  • Omaha was called for nine fouls compared to North Dakota's 10.

  • The Mavericks iced the game with nine throw-ins in the final two minutes of regulation.
