Mavericks Close Non-Conference Slate With Win Over Sooners

Omaha, Neb.— Two first-half goals and some solid defending were all it took for the Omaha Mavericks to earn a 2-1 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday, Sept. 17. 

Omaha's record moves to 3-3-2 with the win. 

How it Happened 

  • In the 12th minute, Sophia Green found the back of the net to give the Mavericks. Cece Behrens was credited with the assist. (1-0) 

  • Just eight minutes later, Maggie Gundersen netted her first goal of the season to double the Omaha lead. (2-0) 

  • Emma Konsmo made three saves in the first half as the teams traded shots. 

  • Out of the break, Oklahoma built pressure, and was able to break through with a goal from Esalenna Galekhutle in the 62nd minute. (2-1) 

  • The Omaha defense stood firm for the rest of the match, blocking two shots in the 66th and 80th minutes. 

  • Konsmo came up clutch down the stretch, making two saves in the 81st minute. She would cap off the Maverick victory with a save on the nation's top goal scorer with 10 seconds left in regulation. 

Inside the Box 

  • The Sooners outshot the Mavericks 20-5, including 8-3 in shots on goal. 

  • Sophia Green scored the 20th goal of her career and now has 48 points as a Maverick. Green now stands alone as Omaha's Division I era record holder for goals and points in a career. 

  • Green matched her career-high with six goals this year. Green totaled six goals in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. 

  • Emma Konsmo made seven saves in the victory. 

  • The Mavericks were called for nine fouls compared to the Sooners' 11.

  • The Mavericks begin the Summit League season as they face the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota on Thursday, Sept. 21. Kickoff from Grand Forks, N.D., is scheduled for 3 p.m.
