Barlow Adds Strong Trio of Rackets to Bolster 2023-24 Roster

Aug 1, 2023

Omaha Mavericks men's tennis head coach Matt Barlow announced three newcomers to the 2023-24 roster today. The trio consists of Mikel Garmendia, Christian Trevey and Gabe Whiston.

Garmendia hails from Santiago, Chile. He won the national junior championship in Chile in 2022. Mikel was ranked number 9 in the U16 category in South America and possesses a Universal Tennis Ranking of 11.2.

"Mikel brings us international experience, an all around tennis game, and tons of potential," Barlow said. "Mikel's older brother currently competes at the Division I level, so he is already familiar with the team format and how important culture is to be successful at this level. He will fit right in and be an immediate impact."

Trevey a 3-star recruit from Parker, Colorado with a UTR of 10.2. He competed for the Intermountain District and earned a ranking of number two in the state of Colorado along with a top 150 national ranking. Trevey has captured 2nd and 3rd place finishes in state #1 singles for Valor Christian high school.
"Christian is a hidden gem in my opinion. An athletic guy with a live arm that is going to improve quickly in college," Barlow said. "He has competed very well at the Intermountain and national level. I think he will only get better and thrive in our training environment at Omaha."

Whiston is a 2-star recruit from Lincoln, Nebraska who boasted an astonishing two-year high school record of 56-3 for Lincoln East high school. During his Junior year, he went undefeated claiming the doubles state championship and the team state championship. Whiston is the top ranked 18's player in Nebraska and has UTR of 9.

"I am really excited to get Gabe on the roster. Gabe is the best player in Nebraska for multiple reasons, but what I like most about Gabe is his work ethic," Barlow said. "I believe he will prove to be an extremely hard worker for us, and get rewarded for his effort here at Omaha."
