FARGO, N.D. - After much delay, the Mavericks were finally able to face North Dakota State in a doubleheader on Sunday, getting shutout 5-0 in game one before riding an early surge to a 5-3 victory in game two.
Omaha remains in fourth place in the Summit League standings at 20-23 overall and 8-12 in league play, putting them half a game ahead of Western Illinois (12-36, 8-13) for the final playoff spot. As for the Bison, they will also stay in second in the standings at 20-27 with a 14-6 conference record.
Game 1
Despite another strong showing from
Preston Tenney on the mound, Omaha's bats were unable to get anything going in game one. NDSU's Cade Feeney held the Mavericks to just four hits in eight innings as the Mavericks were shutout.
As for Tenney, he ended his day after 6.1 solid innings as he pitched in the seventh for the third time this year. After letting a pitch get away from him in the first and subsequently getting taken deep on a two-run homer, he was on point for the rest of his outing, allowing just one more run while striking out six and keeping the Bison hitless in five of his 6.1 innings.
Game 2
The Mavericks flipped the script in game two as they took a 4-0 lead by the end of the second inning.
Eduardo Rosario plated the first two on a single up the middle, before Boeve ripped career double number 51 off the center field wall to score two more.
After the Bison cut Omaha's lead in half in the fifth and got within one in the sixth, they had a prime opportunity to take the lead in the seventh with runners on second and third, only for the third strikeout of the inning for
Wyatt Sellers to keep them at bay. The next inning, a bloop hit from
Cam Frederick got Omaha a much-needed insurance run to make it 5-3.
Sellers came back out and worked a scoreless eighth, before taking the mound again in the ninth where he killed a potential two-out rally by striking out his sixth and final batter of the day to earn the save for Omaha.
Inside the Box Score
With two doubles in game two, Boeve is now in second place all-time on Omaha's doubles leaderboard with 52. The only person with more doubles is Head Coach
Evan Porter with 75.
After coming in to relieve
Harrison Kreiling in the fifth inning of game two,
Luke Gainer tossed 1.2 innings to earn his first win as Maverick.
Sellers set a new career high with six strikeouts in game two, besting his previous single-game high of four.
