ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Mavericks split Saturday's doubleheader at St. Thomas, taking game one in a 13-4 rout before falling 1-4 in game two.
Omaha ends the day at 16-19 overall and 5-9 in the Summit League, while the Tommies remain right behind them in the standings at 4-10 in the conference (6-25 overall).
Game One
Down 3-1 after three innings, Omaha took a permanent lead with a four-run top of the fourth. The first four Mavericks all reached base to jump start the rally, including
Drew Lechnir who lined a two-run single to tie it up.
Eduardo Rosario would pick up his second RBI of the game a couple batters later, while
Zach Lechnir made it 5-3 Omaha with a groundout.
An
Eddie Satisky sac fly in the fifth would be the only offense for either team over the next three innings. In the eighth, though, the Mavericks tacked on three more runs thanks to back-to-back-to-back RBIs from
Haiden Hunt,
Mike Boeve, and
Devin Hurdle. Boeve in particular sent one up the middle and managed to leg it out for his 10th double of the year.
Omaha made it a 10-run game in the top of the ninth as numerous walks and even a bases-loaded balk prolonged the inning.
Zach Lechnir, Boeve, and Hurdle all drove in their second run of the day in the ninth.
Meanwhile,
Preston Tenney and
Luke Gainer did their best to stifle the Tommies offense. Tenney did a solid job limiting St. Thomas to just three runs as he stranded seven base runners in five innings of work to earn his team-leading fifth win. Gainer earned his second save of the year after pitching the final four innings, holding the Tommies scoreless through the first three.
Game Two
A polar opposite of game one, game two started as a tight pitcher's duel between
Harrison Kreiling and Walker Retz. Both pitcher's held the opposition scoreless through the first four innings, with Kreiling limiting the Tommies to only one hit in this span.
After St. Thomas tagged Kreiling for a couple runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Mavericks got one of those runs right back in the top of the sixth as Retz hit the first three batters he faced to load the bases before exiting the game. Hurdle would then hit a deep sac fly to break up the shutout.
This was all the offense Omaha could get, however, as the Tommies shutout the Mavericks over the final three innings to take game two of the doubleheader.
Inside the Box Score
Boeve's double in game one was the 49th of his career, moving him into a tie for third all-time on Omaha's doubles leaderboard.
All nine members of the Mavericks starting lineup in game one accounted for at least two runs in the game, with Hurdle, Rosario, and
Drew Lechnir leading the way with two runs scored and two RBIs each.
Drew Lechnir notched Omaha's only hit in game two with a single to right in the fifth.
