ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Mavericks were unable to take the final game of the series at St. Thomas on Sunday as they were defeated 12-2 in eight innings. The Tommies will win the series 2-1.
Omaha drops to 16-20 with a 5-10 record in the Summit League as they are now in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference with St. Thomas (7-25, 5-10) and Northern Colorado (8-27, 5-10).
Innings 1-4
Much like game two in the series, today's game started off as a fast-moving pitcher's duel between
Charlie Bell and Evan Esch, as each held the other team to a single hit through the first three innings.
Eddie Satisky logged Omaha's first hit of the day in the top of the third with a leadoff double, only for the next three Mavericks to get set down in order.
Omaha would again get something going in the top of the fourth after
Haiden Hunt and
Devin Hurdle both got into scoring position, but the sixth strikeout of the day for Esch left them stranded at second and third.
Ultimately, the Tommies would be the ones to break the ice as they got back-to-back two-run doubles in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead and end Bell's day.
Innings 5-9
After two scoreless innings from Brennan Bales kept it a four-run game, the Mavericks had a prime opportunity to take control of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Omaha got the bases loaded with no outs, starting with a leadoff triple from Hunt.
Drew Lechnir, who had Omaha's only hit in game two yesterday, punched one just past the diving second baseman to score Hunt. That was all the Mavericks would get, though, as a double play ended the inning with the bases still loaded.
From there, a pinch-hit RBI single for
Noah Greise would be the only other run the Mavericks would score as St. Thomas eventually went up by 10 runs to secure the series victory.
Inside the Box Score
Mike Boeve officially moved into 10th place all-time at Omaha in hits at 187 with his single in the eighth.
