OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks came close, but in the end they were not able to complete the season series sweep of Nebraska as they fell 6-3 at home on Tuesday night.
Omaha drops to 15-18 after entering the game with a three-game winning streak, while the Huskers improve to 22-14-1 and snap a three-game skid.
Innings 1-4
The Mavericks fell behind early in the second inning when Husker third baseman Dylan Carey sent a three-run home run over the wall in left to make it 3-0 Nebraska.
In the third, Omaha was able to pick up one run after
Matt Goetzmann,
Haiden Hunt, and
Mike Boeve knocked three-straight, two-out singles. The Mavericks would get another chance to score in the fourth after a leadoff double from
Devin Hurdle, but the next three batters were set down in order.
Innings 5-9
After an unearned run in the fifth made it 4-1 Huskers, the Mavericks had another prime opportunity to score in the sixth as they got runners on second and third with two outs, only for a strikeout to cut things short.
Omaha did cut the deficit down to two runs in the seventh after
Zach Lechnir ripped a leadoff double to left and later advanced to third on a wild pitch, before coming around to score on a sac fly from Hunt.
Over the next two innings, Nebraska grew their lead to 6-2. Though a solo home run from Goetzmann gave Omaha hope in the bottom of the ninth, it was not enough to spark a rally as the Huskers closed things out.
Inside the Box Score
The top of the Mavericks order provided the bulk of their offense tonight, as Goetzmann (2-for-5), Hunt (2-for-3), and Boeve (2-for-4) had six of Omaha's 11 hits and accounted for all three runs.
Goetzmann and Hurdle both extended their hitting streaks to 10-straight games.
