OMAHA, Neb. -
Preston Tenney had a historic day on the mound as he allowed just two hits in a complete game shutout of Northern Colorado as the Mavericks took game two of the series 6-0. This was the first complete game shutout by a Maverick in over five years.
Omaha is back to two games under .500 at 9-11 overall, while also improving to 3-2 in the Summit League. The Bears, meanwhile, drop to 4-19 on the year and are back under .500 in the conference at 2-3.
Innings 1-3
From the moment he struck out the leadoff hitter on three pitches, Tenney was completely dialed in on the mound. He cruised through the first three innings on just 37 pitches, even setting down the first eight batters.
After being held scoreless through two innings, the Mavericks broke the stalemate in the third as
Devin Hurdle sent one right up the middle in an 0-2 count to make it 1-0 Omaha.
Innings 4-6
It remained a tight pitcher's duel into the middle innings, as Tenney retired the side in order each inning on just 35 pitches, while Northern Colorado starter Dylan Smith worked around a couple Mavericks baserunners to keep it a 1-0 game through the fifth.
Then, with two men on in the bottom of the sixth,
Noah Greise sent the first pitch he saw into the wall in left-center to bring home
Cam Frederick and
Mike Boeve and make it 3-0 Mavericks.
Innings 7-9
After getting through the first six innings without giving up a single hit and only allowing one baserunner, Tenney finally surrendered his first hit in the seventh right after the leadoff man reached on an error. With a runner in scoring position for the first time, Tenney settled down and kept the shutout intact as he got the next three batters to all pop up.
In the bottom of the seventh, Omaha grew its lead to 5-0 thanks to three-straight one-out singles from
Eduardo Rosario, Hurdle, and
Haiden Hunt, followed by a double down the line from Frederick.
Tenney came back out for the eighth and without missing a beat, retired the side in order, striking out the last two batters on a nasty breaking ball and one of his hardest fastballs of the day. Sitting at just 90 pitches, Tenney would return to the mound in the ninth. After allowing a leadoff single to start the inning, he only needed three pitches to get the next two batters out, before going back to the high fastball and blowing away the final batter of the day to complete the shutout.
