OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks held a 12-point lead the in the second half looking to sweep the series vs. the Leathernecks. Western Illinois clawed back in and captured the lead with 1:34 to play and held on for a 75-72 win.
The Mavericks fall to 7-18 overall, 3-10 in the league.
Omaha Leaders
JJ White reentered the starting line-up and led Omaha with 16 points. He added four assists and three rebounds.
Frankie Fidler and
Dylan Brougham each recorded 12 points. Fidler tallied six rebounds and five assists, while Brougham was perfect from the field and grabbed five boards.
Jaeden Marshall finished with 10 points and was the final Maverick in double-figures.
Ja'Sean Glover had a productive outing with nine points and nine boards for Omaha.
Western Illinois Leaders
Trenton Massner scored a game-high 28 points on 9-of-20 from the field and 7-of-7 at the line. He grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Vuk Stevanic added 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two seals.
Alec Rosner scored 11 points, while KJ Lee added 11. Massner, Rosner, and Lee each played a full 40 minutes.
Team Stats
Omaha shot over 65 percent in the first half and finished the day shooting 52.8 percent from the field. Western Illinois shot 46.7 percent. Both teams struggled from three-point range shooting under 30 percent, but the Leathernecks sunk four more attempts than the Mavericks.
Both teams scored 38 points in the paint. Omaha's bench scored 26 points, while WIU's didn't tally a single one. The Leathernecks led on points off turnovers (19-13), second chance (15-11), and on the fast break (10-2).
Inside the First Half
White got the Mavericks on the board first Saturday with a layup just over a minute in, but then the game swung in the Leathernecks' favor with a 10-2 run. With 13:28 on the clock, Lee backed in for a layup and gave WIU its largest lead of the game at seven before Omaha began to chip away.
Marshall provided a spark off the bench and worked with Glover and Fidler to get within one of the Leathernecks over the next 90 seconds. It wasn't until Marshall's three at the 8:26 mark that the Mavericks would tie it up 18-18. It gave them the momentum they needed and a 13-0 run helped Omaha to an eight point lead with 6:01 to go. Luke Jungers had late threes down the stretch opening the lead to double-digits, and the Mavericks led 41-29 at the half.
Inside the Second Half
Things looked to be Omaha's after the first six minutes of the second half when the Mavericks managed to hold on to a 12 point edge, but the Leathernecks clawed back with a 10-2 run from the 9:05 to the 6:32 mark getting Omaha's lead to one.
It wasn't until a Massner three-pointer with 2:48 on the clock that WIU tied the game 62-62. Brougham's layup on the other end would give the Mavericks their final lead as five straight points claimed the lead once again for WIU. Rosner connected from deep with 1:34 to go and the Leathernecks never looked back. With five seconds to play, White chucked up a three to get within one, but Massner headed to the line. Omaha couldn't covert one final attempt, and WIU won, 75-72.
