OMAHA, Neb. - A frigid February evening was not enough to slow down the Mavericks as they staged an incredible comeback against Kansas State to win their home opener 7-6 on Tuesday night.
Omaha (2-6) picks up its second win in a row and its first win of the season against a Power Five opponent, while the Wildcats (4-5) continue to fall with their fifth-straight loss.
Innings 1-3
Haiden Hunt got the day started with a bang as he sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his first home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
The Wildcats, however, were ready to respond as they plated three more in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Omaha did manage to get runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, but a three-pitch strikeout ended the potential rally.
Innings 4-5
After a scoreless third and fourth, K-State managed to grow its lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth as Nick Goodwin launched a first-pitch home run to left, followed by another run off of three straight fielder's choice for the Wildcats.
In the bottom of the inning, though, the Mavericks would get right back in it as they took advantage of two K-State errors to plate a couple of unearned runs.
Eddie Satisky got on and advanced
Mike Boeve to second after K-State's first baseman muffed a routine play at first. Then,
Drew Lechnir dragged a bunt and reached safely after the catcher's throw went into right field, allowing Boeve to score.
Zach Lechnir would follow his brother and groundout to short, allowing Satisky to come home.
Innings 6-9
After the excitement of the fifth inning, the next two were relatively quiet.
Eduardo Rosario helped see to that, catching a runner at second in each one.
Following a quick top of the eighth for
Kai Reum,
Matt Goetzmann got Omaha's rally started in the bottom of the inning by immediately getting hit a pitch and advancing to second on a balk. Hunt then beat out an infield hit, before Garret Kennedy bunted them both to second and third. Boeve was up next and promptly ripped a single to left center to make it 6-5. Satisky was then hit by a pitch and he and Boeve then moved into scoring position on a sac fly from
Cam Frederick, setting up another clutch hit from
Zach Lechnir who brought them both home on a single to left, giving Omaha its first lead of the day.
Coming in for the first save of his Division I career,
Rans Sanders quickly set the first two batters down on a pop up and a strikeout, before getting the final out of the game on a fly ball to center which Hunt easily caught for the win.
Inside the Box Score
Reum earned his first career win with the Mavericks after tossing two shutout innings in relief.
This is the second time this season Omaha had four batters record multiple hits as Hunt (2-for-5), Boeve (2-for-3), Satisky (2-for-4), and Goetzmann (2-for-3) all recorded two each. Each of the first three also came around to score two runs apiece.
