PROVO, Utah - The Mavericks came back late to erase a six run deficit against BYU and force extra innings, but in the end it was the Cougars who walked it off in the bottom of the 10th to take game one of the series 12-11.
Despite the loss, Omaha (2-7) had its most offensively productive day of the season as the Mavericks plated their most runs since April 24, 2022 against Western Illinois. As for BYU (3-6), they win their home opener and also snap a five-game losing streak in the process.
Innings 1-3
For the second game in a row, the Mavericks plated a run in the first inning as
Haiden Hunt led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a sac fly from
Mike Boeve. The Cougars, though, got even in the bottom of the inning with a two-out solo home run from Austin Deming.
The Mavericks got another leadoff double in the second courtesy of
Brennen Bales, but BYU starter Jack Sterner set the next three batters down in order.
Caleb Riedel followed suit and struck out the side on 13 pitches, giving him four-straight strikeouts.
Riedel then made it five punch outs in a row in the top of the third. Unfortunately, the next five batters all reached base safely as the Cougars ended the inning with a 5-1 lead.
Innings 4-6
Riedel settled down in the fourth inning, working around a hit batsman by striking out the final two batters to end his day with eight total strikeouts.
The next inning,
Eduardo Rosario launched his second home run of the season on a solo shot to left to cut the Cougars lead to three. Once again, though, BYU came right back and scored four more in the bottom of the fifth, including the second home run of the day from Deming.
Omaha finally managed to string together an extended rally in the top of the sixth, with the first four batters all getting on as Boeve,
Eddie Satisky, and Bales all brought home a run to make it 5-9
Innings 7-9
After getting another run in the sixth, BYU went up 11-5 in the seventh with their third home run of the day.
The Mavericks were not out of it yet, however, as
Drew Lechnir and Boeve got on with back-to-back walks to start the eighth. Satisky lined an opposite field single to bring in one run, followed by a sac fly from Bales to get Omaha back within four. Then,
Zach Lechnir continued to rake as he ripped his first triple of the year to make it a three-run game.
Devin Hurdle capped off the rally with a double of his own to make it 9-11.
Following a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Mavericks had one last chance to keep the game alive. With one away, Hunt found the gap yet again and knocked his second double of the day.
Cam Frederick then came in to pinch hit and promptly drove Hunt home with a single to right. Boeve was up next and, like he has time and time again, came in clutch with a double to left center to bring home Frederick and tie the game at 11-11.
Extra Innings
Rosario beat out the sixth double of the day for Omaha in the top of the 10th, but ultimately the Mavericks were unable to bring him home. On to the bottom of the inning, the Cougars had one on and two outs when Jacob Wilk got his second hit of the day to walk it off for BYU.
