DENVER, Colo. - The regular season came to an end Saturday with a loss to Denver. The Pioneers held Omaha to a season-low from the field and won 72-61.
The Mavericks finish the regular season 8-22 overall, 4-14 in the league.
Omaha Leaders
The Mavericks were led by
Marquel Sutton who scored 13 points, while
Jaeden Marshall added 11 points. He was 3-of-6 from the field with two threes. He also finished the night 3-of-4 from the line. Marshall added three assists and one steal.
Frankie Fidler and
Ja'Sean Glover had four steals each. Fidler and
Dylan Brougham grabbed team-highs with five boards each.
Denver Leaders
Tevin Smith led all-scorers with 18 points. He was just 5-of-13 from the field but went 7-of-9 at the line. Tommy Bruner and Touko Tainamo added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Tainamo recorded a double-double with 11 boards. Bruner grabbed another seven. He also tallied four steals.
Team Stats
Omaha forced 19 turnovers and tallied 15 steals with the help of a full-court press.
Omaha shot 29.8 percent from the field, while Denver shot 51 percent. The Pioneers also had more success from deep shooting 31.3 percent, while the Mavericks were just 25 percent from the arc.
Inside the First Half
The Mavericks had a slow start to Saturday's game with the Pioneers. They couldn't find their first field goal until the 12:43 mark. Two minutes in,
Frankie Fidler sunk two from the charity stripe, but Denver ran out to a 11-2 lead.
Marquel Sutton scored on a tip-in for the first Omaha basket. It took nearly five more minutes before he'd score from the field again for the Mavericks.
Denver led 26-8 with just under four minutes left in the first half. The Mavericks finally found a spark closing the half on a 10-6 run. Fidler and Osburn netted three-pointers to cut the lead to 14 at the break.
Inside the Second Half
Omaha forced 14 of Denver's 19 turnovers in the second half, but the Mavericks struggled from the field and couldn't convert them to easy buckets. The first four minutes of action saw an 11-6 run from Omaha, including five straight points from
Tony Osburn. Tainamo helped put out the spark with six straight points for the Pioneers for a 44-29 lead.
At the mid-way points, the Mavericks were able to get within nine of the Pioneers. Marshall hit a three, while Glover's layup made it 50-41 DU. A 7-0 run by the Pioneers from the 6:08-4:31 mark helped seal the win as the Mavericks wouldn't get back within single-digits.
Game Notes
-Omaha's 15 steals marks a single-game high this season. It is second on the summit League charts.
-Marshal scored double-figures for the eighth time this season.
