Omaha Splits Day Two at Texas Classic

AUSTIN, Texas - The Mavericks split day two at the Texas Classic with a win against Incarnate Word and loss to Texas. Omaha rallied for a nine-inning 6-4 win against the Cardinals before falling in five innings to the Longhorns.

Omaha improves to 6-3 overall.

Game One: Omaha 6, Incarnate Word 4 (9 inn.)
How It Happened
  • The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Cardinals put the first run on the board. Omaha recorded the first three hits of the game, but UIW used a single through the left side by White to plate the first run.
  • Omaha pulled ahead in the fourth inning Emma Durr and Maddox Thomas got on base with a walk and base hit to start the inning. Jaelle Johnson pinch ran for Thomas and scored with Durr later in the inning on a double from Maggie O'Brien for a 2-1 lead.
  • The lead didn't las long as UIW found a way to score two more in the fifth for a 3-2 edge. Cram and White singled and got in scoring position for the Cardinals following a grounded out. Altamirano singled up the middle for Cram's run, while Mata singled to the catcher for White to sneak in for the second run.
  • In the sixth, Durr tied the game. She reached after being hit by a pitch and then capitalized on a pair of wild pitches and an error to score. The run sent the game to extras with neither team finding home by the seventh.
  • With a runner placed on second, the Mavericks wasted no time. Jenna Marshall gave Omaha a 4-3 lead after a sac bunt and sac fly. Cordon then tied it for UIW following a single from Villarreal.
  • The Mavericks claimed the lead for the win in the ninth inning. Rachel Weber batted in the game-winning run with a double. She then scored the insurance run off a single from Ava Rongisch. UIW had no answer, and Omaha won 6-4.

How It Happened
  • Omaha tallied the first run against Texas in game two of Saturday. O'Brien singled to center field and made her way to second following a wild pitch. Weber then sent her home with a single to center two-batters later.
  • The Longhorns didn't tie the game until the bottom of the third inning. Popelka singled to lead off and eventually scored on a Maverick fielding error to tie it, 1-1.
  • Texas blew open the lead in the fourth jumping ahead 6-1. Two of the runs were unearned, but the Longhorns used two singles and a stolen base to tally the other three runs.
  • The Mavericks couldn't rally and gave up a lead off homer in the fifth. A pair of singles from Whitaker and Washington plated two more runs for a walk-off five inning win.

  • Meyer pitched the first four innings. She retired five batters and fell to 2-2.
