OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks snapped a nine-game losing streak Thursday night against the South Dakota Coyotes. They were led by
Frankie Fidler's fourth career double-double powering the 80-72 win at Baxter Arena.
The Mavericks improve to 8-20 overall, 4-12 in the Summit League.
Omaha Leaders
Fidler posted 27 points and 10 rebounds, which were both game-highs. Fidler was 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-7 at the line.
Marquel Sutton matched him on the glass with a career-high 10 boards.
JJ White and
Ja'Sean Glover tallied 11 points each for the Mavericks. Glover added five rebounds, three of which were on the offensive glass. White led Omaha with five assists.
Tony Osburn was the final Maverick in double-figures with 10 points. He also notched a personal best six rebounds.
South Dakota Leaders
Kruz Perrott-Hunt led the Yotes with 16 points. He shot 50 percent from the field and hit four from deep. Tasos Kamateros, AJ Plitzuweit, and Max Burchill each scored 12 points. All three recorded two made three-pointers.
Kamateros grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and five assists. Plitzuweit and Burchill added four assists each.
Team Stats
Both teams shot 45.5 percent from the field, but the Coyotes held an edge from deep making 11 threes to the Mavericks' six. Omaha made up the difference at the line finishing the night 24-of-31 to USD's 11-of-15.
The Mavericks also dominated the glass out-rebounding the Coyotes, 41-26. Omaha led in points off turnovers (10-2), points in the paint (32-24), second chance points (15-4), fast break points (9-4), and bench points (21-18).
Inside the First Half
Fidler immediately made an impact for the Mavericks scoring 11 of their first 13 points. With 8:40 to go in the first half White stepped up and made a three-pointer keeping the Mavericks within one, but less than a minute later the Coyotes took a three-point edge into the eight-minute media timeout.
Over the next three minutes, the Mavericks forced four ties and finally took their first lead of the game with back-to-back three-pointers from
Luke Jungers with under two minutes to play. Glover kept the Omaha lead at three with a layup, but Perrott-Hunt sunk a three with three seconds left to tie the game 39-39 at the break.
Inside the Second Half
The second half went back-and-forth with six lead changes. South Dakota held the advantage with eight minutes left before a pair of free throws from
Tony Osburn knotted the game 63-63.
The free throws sparked an 11-2 Omaha run with buckets from Glover, Sutton, and Osburn. Demani Hayes had a wide open dunk up the middle of the paint with 4:14 to play, but the Mavericks went to the line three more times in the final three minutes to snap a nine-game skid with a 78-72 win Thursday night.
Game Notes
-Fidler extended his double-figure scoring streak to seven games.
-It marked his fourth career double-double.
-Thursday also marked his 10
th career game with 20+ point and sixth this season.
-For the first time in his Maverick career, Sutton grabbed 10 boards.
-This was Omaha's first win against South Dakota since the 2018-19 season.
