CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Omaha softball team swept opening day action with a 5-1 win over Iowa State and a 6-5 win vs. UNI in extra innings.
Lynsey Tucker had a day at the plate finished 7-for-8, including a career-best performance of 5-for-5 vs. UNI.
The Mavericks improve to 2-0 after the first day of action.
Game One: Omaha 5, Iowa State 1
How It Happened
- Both teams tallied runs in the first inning. The Cyclones got theirs following a stolen base - error combo that set up Ramos for the sac fly to score Spelhaug. Marra Cramer then tied it for Omaha who was walked in on Ava Rongisch's at-bat.
- Lynsey Tucker opened the bottom of the third with a lead-off single. She then scored on Rachel Weber's homer that helped the Mavericks to a 3-1 lead.
- Emma Durr plated two more Maverick runners in the fifth. Tucker reached on an error, while Weber got on by a fielder's choice. Both scored on Durr's double making it 5-1.
- ISU had one more hit in the game, but Omaha ran away with the first win of the season. 5-1.
Game Notes
- Durr recorded her first career double. She tallied two RBI.
- Tucker finished with two hits and two runs scored.
- Weber had two runs and two RBI.
- Cramer, Durr, Rongisch, and Alex Olson all made their first career starts.
- Kamryn Meyer pitched a complete game earning her first win. She recorded 10 strikeouts.
- With those 10 Ks, Meyer moves up to fourth all-time in career strikeouts at 505.
Game Two: Omaha 6, UNI 5 (8 innings)
How It Happened
- The second game had a bit more action from the start for Omaha. Tucker and Weber got on base in the first inning with Tucker scoring the first run on a passed ball.
- UNI quickly tied it 1-1 with a lead-off homer from Dodge. Hogan then doubled the lead with a RBI single to plate Parks.
- The Panthers held on to the lead until Sydney Ross sent a rocket for a two-run homer and a 3-2 Omaha lead.
- The lead didn't last long with UNI swinging momentum in its favor in the bottom of the third. Erpelding entered the game to pinch run following a walk and scored later in the inning off a fielder's choice situation to tie the game 3-3. Sanders tallied the leading run on a Moss sac fly before the inning ended.
- Omaha relied once again on Tucker to change the pace of the game in the top of the fourth. She plated O'Brien and knotted the game 4-4 with a single to center.
- Action halted until the fifth inning when UNI regained a one-run lead. Sanders led off with a triple to center and scored on a sac fly from Snider two at-bats later.
- Cramer scored the game-tying run on another Tucker at-bat. This time Tucker doubled to right center for a 5-5 tie in the sixth, which eventually forced extra innings.
- The teams each placed a runner on second in the eighth, but the Mavericks were the only ones to convert. O'Brien got to third on a wild pitch, and she scored the game-winning run on another hit from Tucker.
Game Notes
- Tucker had a career-game at the plate. She finished 5-for-5. Her five hits and three RBI mark career-highs.
- Tucker also scored a run.
- Cramer, Ross, and Sophie Cerveny finished the game with two hits each.
- The Mavericks totaled 13 hits.
- Sydney Nuismer earned her first win of the year. She struckout five Panthers.
