CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Make it four straight wins for the Omaha softball team Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks pulled out two gritty 2-1 wins over Drake and UNI to sweep another day of action.
With the wins, Omaha improves to 4-0. It's the best start to a season since 2014.
Game One: Omaha 2, Drake 1
How It Happened
- Omaha tallied its first two hits of the game with the help of Lynsey Tucker and Rachel Weber in the first, but it was Drake who would cross home plate for the first run of the game in the second.
- Miller led off with a walk and capitalized later in the inning on a fielding error to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
- The Mavericks were quiet until the bottom of the sixth. Maggie O'Brien reached on a walk to start the inning. She got herself to third on a single by Marra Cramer. Weber was set up for the sac fly, and O'Brien evened the game 1-1.
- Omaha defense locked down in the seventh turning a double play to end the top half.
- The Mavericks gained an early base runner with Sydney Ross getting hit by a pitch. She got to third after a stolen base and wild pitch. Alex Olson stepped up to the plate and hit her home with a walk-off single to center, and Omaha won, 2-1.
Game Notes
- Omaha finished with four total hits against Drake, all of which were tallied by different Mavericks.
- Olson recorded her first career-hit.
- Kamryn Meyer had the start in the circle. Over four innings of work, she retired eight Bulldogs.
- Sydney Nuismer came in for relief. She struck out three and improves to 2-0 on the year.
Game Two: Omaha 2, UNI 1
How It Happened
- UNI put a run on the board early in the second game of Saturday's action. The Panthers used two hits to plate one run. Sanders and Standerski tallied base hits with Sanders scoring on Standerski's single to left center.
- Olivia Aden and Weber responded with hits for the Mavericks by the fourth inning, but Omaha remained scoreless until the sixth.
- Tucker led off with a base hit down the left field line to get on base for Omaha. Weber stepped up and cranked her fifth pitch out of the park for a two-run homer. Omaha took a 2-1 edge with one and a half innings to go.
- UNI tallied a hit in each of its final two innings at the plate, but Omaha held on for its fourth straight win.
Game Notes
- The Mavericks recorded five hits against the Panthers.
- Weber led Omaha with two. Both were multi-base hits with a double and a home run.
- Anna Chapman made her season debut in the circle. She pitched the first 2.2 innings.
- Abby Flanagan made her first appearance as a Mavericks. She relieved Chapman and pitched the next 3.2 innings. Flanagan captured her first win and improves to 1-0 on the year.
- Meyer pitched the final .2 innings. She retired one batter and got her first save of the season.
