OMAHA, Neb. – The Mavericks started off the 2023-24 season with a home victory as they routed the Doane Tigers 85-53.
Omaha begins the season at 1-0 while Doane drops to .500 at 2-2.
Leaders for Omaha
The Mavericks had three players score double-digits today, led by newcomer
Nick Davis who shined in his Omaha debut shooting 6-for-8 with 14 points. The team's top-two returning scorers
Frankie Fidler (11 points) and
Marquel Sutton (13 points) followed closely behind Davis, with all three also pulling down four rebounds.
It was
Jamal Ambrose who led the team in boards, though, as he racked up five in his first career game.
Leaders for Doane
Brady Timm and Ben Renshaw paced the Tigers with nine points each, with Timm going a perfect 6-for-6 on free throws. Renshaw also recorded six rebounds off the bench to lead the team.
Team Stats
As a team, the Mavericks shot .486, going 34-for-70 on the night, while the Tigers finished at .348 (16-for-46). Doane did, however, hold the edge in 3-PT FGs at .368 (7-for-19) vs. .261 (6-for-23) for Omaha.
Omaha dominated Doane in the paint, posting a whopping 52 points in the lane vs. just 14 for the Tigers.
Inside the First Half
Davis established himself early on for the Mavericks, giving them a 7-6 lead after a layup and an and-one at 17:16. He would add four more points in the next two minutes with his first dunk of the year and another layup.
Omaha subbed heavily throughout the half, with 12 players seeing the court and recording a point. Sutton and
Luke Jungers drained the first three-pointers of the day for Omaha at 12:34 and 11:19, respectively, while Ambrose,
Biko Johnson,
Marcel Bryant, and
Grant Stubblefield all logging their first career points in the final 10 minutes.
Off the steal from
JJ White at 3:30, Stubblefield put Omaha up by at least 20 points for the first time today at 34-13.
Inside the Second Half
The Mavericks did not let up in the second half as they continued to control the court with aggressive play and frequent subbing. Pulling down a board after a block from Davis, Fidler notched his first three-pointer of the season to open scoring just 38 seconds in. The Tigers were able to build some momentum towards the middle of the half, eventually getting to within 12 at 12:31 after a 5-0 run.
Backed by six points from Byrant over the next four minutes, the Mavericks would rebuild their lead and then some. At 6:00, Fidler tipped one in to give Omaha it's largest lead yet at 75-50. Two minutes later, White, Stubblefield, and Davis combined to go on a 10-0 scoring run to give the Mavericks their largest lead of the night at 85-53 with just over a minute remaining.
Game Notes
-In addition to all 12 players who saw the court making a bucket, 10 of them pulled down at least one rebound as well.
-Omaha's .486 FG% is higher than 20 out of 32 games from last season.
-Likewise, the team's 39 rebounds would have been tied for their third most in a single game last season.

The Mavericks hit the road for the first time this season when they head down to Texas for a game at TCU on Thursday followed by North Texas on Saturday.
