FORT WORTH, Texas – In their first road game of the season, the Mavericks challenged Big 12 powerhouse TCU early on, but ultimately lost 82-60 on Thursday.
Omaha is now 1-1 to start its season, while the Horned Frogs remain undefeated through their first two games.
Leaders for Omaha
Frankie Fidler had a tremendous game against a formidable opponent, shooting 7-for-15, including 3-for-6 from deep, to become the first Maverick this season to reach the 20-point mark. He also led the team with seven rebounds.
Nick Davis and
Jaeden Marshall were Omaha's other double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points each. Along with Fidler, each of them made three free throws tonight.
Leaders for TCU
The Horned Frogs had four players in double-digits today, led by JaKobe Coles who went 7-for-8 and totaled 21 points. Emanuel Miller was right behind with 17 points, along with a team-high seven boards.
Team Stats
Omaha actually topped TCU in multiple shooting stats tonight: free throws made (10 vs. 9), 3-PT FGs made (6 vs. 3), and 3-PT FG% (33.3% vs. 20.0%).
Inside the First Half
With some solid defense out of the gate forcing multiple TCU turnovers, the Mavericks did a good job of preventing the Horned Frogs from building too great a lead in the first, keeping within 10 for most of the half. Offensively, Fidler and Marshall were the stars for Omaha, scoring 25 of the team's 33 points.
Marshall opened scoring on the day after pulling down a defensive board and taking it all the way for the layup 30 seconds into the game. Meanwhile, Fidler drained two threes, one at beginning of half at 18:47 to put Omaha up by four, and another near the end at 6:24 to cut TCU's lead to six.
Inside the Second Half
TCU started pulling away at the start of the second by going on a 12-0 run through the first five minutes. After that, though, the Mavericks actually matched them in points over the final 15 minutes with 27 apiece.
After Fidler got his 20th point of the day on a free throw at 10:22, several other Mavericks started to heat up in the final 10 minutes. Davis went up the court for an easy dunk off the steal from
Grant Stubblefield at 7:48, before making three from the charity stripe over the next minute and a half. Later,
Tony Osburn sunk his first three with 3:16 left, which was immediately followed by
JJ White taking one coast-to-coast after ripping the ball away from Micah Peavy and beating TCU to the net for the layup.
Game Notes
- This is the 13th game of Fidler's career that he has topped 20 points, last doing so in the Summit League Tournament vs. Kansas City last March.
- Davis now starts his Mavericks career with back-to-back double-digit scoring games.
- For Marshall, this is his first double-digit scoring game of the season and the 11th of his career.
