The Omaha Mavericks improve to 5-2-1 after defeating the Long Island Sharks 5-4 in OT tonight to secure a weekend sweep.
Captain
Nolan Sullivan got the scoring started late in the first period on the power play with his third goal of the season. Sullivan picked up the rebound on a point-shot from
Tanner Ludtke, and
Griffin Ludtke picked up the secondary assist as the Mavericks skated into the first intermission with a one-goal lead.
Midway through the second period, Omaha added another goal off the stick of
Ty Mueller. Mueller's third goal of the year was assisted by
Zach Urdahl and
Joaquim Lemay. Long Island would respond with a late goal from Josh Zary as the teams went into the second intermission with the Mavericks holding a 2-1 advantage.
At the 5:49 mark of the 3
rd period, Maverick newcomer
Zach Urdahl poked a puck by a LIU defenseman and threw on the afterburners, going in alone to bury his second goal of the season. Urdahl's lamp lighter extended Omaha's lead to 3-1.
63 seconds later, LIU answered back on the power play to pull within one. 1:38 later,
Tanner Ludtke found a loose puck out front and deposited it into the Sharks net for his second goal of the campaign. Urdahl and Graduate blueliner
Kirby Proctor had the helpers on goal.
Up 4-2, the Mavericks were nabbed for a 5-minute major for contact to the head with 7:12 remaining in regulation. The Sharks threw everything they had at the Omaha net and were able to find the back of the net twice to equalize things at 4-4 with just 2:12 left in regulation.
With 57 seconds left in the 3
rd period,
Tanner Ludtke drew a hooking minor while driving the net. The penalty carried over to the overtime frame where Omaha would go on to finish the job. 52 seconds into the extra frame, the French connection of Jo Lemay and
Jacob Guevin hooked up for the game winning goal as Lemay wired home the overtime winner.
Lemay, T. Ludtke, Mueller and Urdahl all registered multi-point games this evening. With the second goal of the game, Mueller extended his goal streak to three games.
The Mavericks put their eight-game home stand in the books and hit the road to take on the Denver Pioneers next weekend to continue NCHC play.
