The Omaha Mavericks improve to 14-10-2 after securing a weekend split with the No. 9 Western Michigan Broncos behind tonight's 2-0, 40-save shutout victory.
Freshman netminder
Simon Latkoczy has now registered back-to-back shutouts in his last two starts. He turned away all 21 shots in last Saturday's series finale against Miami and career high 40 tonight. The Broncos pushed in the 3
rd period by throwing 17 shots on the Trencin, Slovakia native but were unable to solve him all night long.
The two
NCHC opponents met for the fourth and final time of the regular season tonight. The Mavericks take the regular season series with the No. 9 Broncos, 3-1. Averaging an NCAA best, 4.37 goals per game this season, Omaha was able to shut Western down all night long.
Both Maverick goals came in the 2
nd period. The 2
nd period has been the Mavericks best period all season long, outscoring opponents 37-22.
Jonny Tychonick got the scoring started for Omaha with a rocket one-timer on the Mavericks first power play opportunity of the game.
Tyler Weiss and Cam Berg were credited with the helpers. Berg, while on their second power play, blasted home a slapshot from just inside the blueline to extend Omaha's lead to 2-0. Tychonick and Weiss registered the assists. The Mavericks 6th ranked power play went 2/3 in tonight's contest.
Berg, Tychonick and Weiss all had multi-point games. It's the fourth multi-point performance of the season for Berg and Tychonick while it's Weiss' fifth.
The Mavericks will be idle next weekend before welcoming the Colorado College Tigers to town the following weekend for a two-game series.
