Mavericks Cap Off Red Hot Homestand by Blanking RedHawks

The 13-9-2 Omaha Mavericks finished their six-game homestand this evening by shutting out the Miami RedHawks 2-0 with a pair of 3rd period goals.

The Mavericks and RedHawks skated to a 0-0 deadlock until the 3:59 mark of the 3rd period. Senior captain Nolan Sullivan took a puck down low and fed Jimmy Glynn a backdoor pass who tapped in for his second game winning goal in as many nights. Glynn's third lamp lighter of the season was also assisted by Senior blueliner Kirby Proctor. With 24 seconds left in regulation, sophomore forward Cam Berg added the insurance goal when he fired home a shot into the empty Miami night while on the power play. Berg's empty net tally was assisted by Jo Lemay.

"Nice example of sticking with it. Obviously we had a pretty good game overall with some opportunities there, but nothing was going in," Omaha head coach Mike Gabinet said. "We just stuck with the process there and kept coming and coming and then got rewarded there in the 3rd period. Those are tough games to play in and the guys found a way, I'm really proud of the group."

With tonight's victory, Omaha improves to 8-5-1 at Baxter Arena this season. They are 7-0-1 in their last eight games on home ice. In those eight games, they outscored opponents 31-15 and on the current five-game home win streak, they are outscoring their opponents 20-6.

The Mavericks peppered Miami netminder Logan Neaton with 35 shots on net tonight. On the opposite, freshman goaltender Simon Latkoczy registered his first career shutout, turning aside all 21 shots he faced. Latkoczy improves to 6-2-1 and adds to his streak of games where he has allowed two goals or less which now sits at seven.

Omaha had another stellar performance in the faceoff circle this evening. The Mavericks bested the RedHawks 31-19 on the dots with Cam Berg going 14-7 and Nolan Sullivan winning eight of the 10 draws he took.

The Mavericks will hop on the road to Western Michigan to take on the Broncos in Kalamazoo, Michigan next weekend.
