BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Mavericks dropped Thursday's game to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 84-61. Despite a 13-2 second half run helping cut the lead to single-digits, the Jackrabbits responded with hot shooting to win their sixth straight against the Mavericks.
With the loss, Omaha falls to 7-13 overall, 3-5 in the league.
Omaha Leaders
Frankie Fidler led the Mavericks with 13 points Thursday. He flirted with a double-double grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.
Marquel Sutton and
JJ White each tallied 12 points for Omaha. Sutton was 5-of-12 from the field, while White was 4-of-9 with a three. White and Fidler led Omaha with four assists each.
Akol Arop recorded eight points and eight boards off the bench, while
Tony Osburn also added eight points off the bench.
South Dakota State Leaders
Zeke Mayo dropped a game-high 31 points on 9-of-14 from the field. He made six from deep and finished the night 7-of-9 from the line. Alex Arians posted 16 points, while William Kyle had 12 points and eight boards off the bench.
Mayo also led the game with five assists.
Team Stats
The Mavericks shot 41.4 percent from the field and made 4-of-12 from three-point range. The Jackrabbits were a tad more productive shooting 53.6 percent. They finished 12-of-22 from the arc.
SDSU capitalized on Omaha's 12 turnovers converting them to 23 points. The Mavericks led on the second chance 15-10 and off the bench 16-14. Points in the paint (30-30) and points off the fast break (5-5) were tied.
Inside the First Half
Omaha took the first lead of the game with an inside feed from Fidler to Brougham, but the Jackrabbits responded jumping out to an 8-2 edge. Three early turnovers from the Mavericks made for a quick six points for SDSU. Sutton hit a long jumper from the top of the key to cut the lead to four ahead of the 15-minute media timeout. Sutton continued to work out of the quick break with a three-point play to tie the game, 8-8.
Tony Osburn then recaptured the Omaha lead with a three-pointer at the 13:17 mark, but it would be the last time Omaha held and edge for the half.
The Jackrabbits followed up Osburn's three with a 7-0 run. They extended their lead to double-digits at the 6:48 mark on a three-pointer from Arians. On the next trip down the court, Fidler managed to get the lead down to eight, but Arians erased Fidler's effort. SDSU continued to build its momentum taking a 17-point lead twice in the final four minutes and took a 41-26 edge into halftime.
Inside the Second Half
The game remained in SDSU's favor in the first half of the second. By the seventh minute of action, the Jackrabbits managed to extend their lead to over 20. Mims made it a 22-point lead at the 13:18 mark for their largest lead yet. Omaha put the pressure on and went on a 13-2 run holding SDSU scoreless for a five-minute stretch.
Ja'Sean Glover sparked the Omaha rally with a second chance layup. White,
Akol Arop, Fidler, and Sutton contributed to the run. Following the eight-minute media timeout, White converted two from the line to cut the lead to single-digits, 59-50.
The Omaha rally didn't last long as Mayo and Arians began to heat up from the arc. They combined for three in the next two minutes helping build the lead back to 17 by the 5:12 mark. With under four minutes left in the game, Mayo, Mims, and Arians made four straight threes for the Jacks. They took their largest lead at 28 with Mims from deep at the 1:25 mark. White and Fidler chipped away in the final minute, but SDSU went on to win, 84-61.
