Freshmen Carry Mavericks at South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. - The trio of Omaha freshmen, Luke Jungers, Tony Osburn, and Ja'Sean Glover, carried the Mavericks at South Dakota Saturday afternoon. Their efforts weren't enough for an Omaha win, and the Coyotes won, 84-68.

The Mavericks fall to 7-14 overall, 3-6 in league action.

Omaha Leaders
Jungers dropped a game and career-high 27 points. He was 8-of-14 from the field making six from deep. Obsurn added 13 points after opening the game 3-of-3 from three-point range. He finished the day 5-of-11 from the field. Glover went for eight points and four boards.

Off the bench, Akol Arop added six points and a team-best seven rebounds. JJ White tallied a game and career-high nine assists.

South Dakota Leaders
Kruz Perrott-Hunt went 8-of-14 from the field for a USD team-high 22 points. He was joined in double-figures by AJ Piltzuweit (19), Tasos Kamateros (16), and Damani Hayes (10). Piltzuweit was hot from deep for the Coyotes finished 5-of-7 from the arc. He also dished out four assists.

Kamateros fell short of a double-double with a game-leading nine rebounds.

Team Stats
Omaha had a good day from the field shooting 45.6 percent. With the help of Jungers and Osburn, the Mavericks shot over 47 percent from three-point range. The Coyotes were even more productive connecting on 58.5 percent of their attempts. They shot 55 percent from the arc, but both teams made 11 from deep.

Each team had 10 turnovers with USD narrowly leading on points off turnovers, 14-13. The Coyotes also led on in the paint (30-22), on the fast break (10-2) and on the second chance (9-4). 

Inside the First Half
Osburn was ready to go right out of the jump ball hitting back-to-back threes for Omaha who took a 6-0 edge in the first 42 seconds of action. Hayes then connected for USD's first points of the half and sparked a 9-0 run to take the lead over the Mavericks. The lead didn't last long with help from Frankie Fidler and another three from Osburn at the 15:29 mark. Jungers was fresh off the bench ready to shoot following the 16-minute media timeout. His first three of the game came at the 13:33 mark giving Omaha a 14-11 lead.

The Mavericks held on until midway through when Plitzuewit's three tied it, 16-16. The Mavericks tied the game once more over the next two minutes and managed to cut USD's lead down to one twice before the four-minute media timeout. Kennedy Brown grabbed an offensive board and put it back with 5:23 to play making it 27-26 in favor of USD. An 11-3 run for the Coyotes allowed them to take a double-digit lead of 11 with just over two to play. Jungers and Arop cut the lead back to single-digits with a late three and dunk, but Paul Bruns had the final say at the buzzer and USD took a 44-34 lead into halftime.

Inside the Second Half
Glover provided a spark for Omaha right out of the break with a layup and three-pointer to get the half started. He got the Mavericks within five. Osburn, White, and Jungers continued to help chip away at the lead. With 14:42 left on the clock, Jungers got the lead down to three with a make from deep. He scored the next five points to tie the game, 51-51 at the 13:16 mark. Arop had the magic touch for the lead at 12:14. The next minute and a half saw three more lead changes. Fidler's layup just outside the 11-minute mark would be Omaha's final lead of the game, 57-56.

Archambault swung momentum back in USD's favor with a jumper. It sparked an 11-0 run as the Coyotes held Omaha without a bucket for the next four minutes. Arop broke up the USD scoring cutting the lead to eight with 6:58 to play. Jungers would get Omaha within at least six of USD in the final seven minutes, but the Coyotes remained hot from the field. Plitzuweit scored back-to-back threes under the three-minute mark to seal the win. The Coyotes took it away, 84-68.
