OMAHA, Neb. - In-state rivals, Mavericks and Huskers, kicked off 2022 action with an exhibition Sunday night. It was a battle on both ends of the field resulting in a hard fought 0-0 draw for the record-setting 1,252 crowd at Caniglia Field.
How It Happened
- Omaha put on the offensive pressure right out of the kickoff Sunday night. About five minutes into the match, Reagan Bourgeois placed a tough shot at the top of the net to be punched out by Nebraska's goalkeeper at the last second.
- Less than two minutes later, Regan Zimmers had an open net and placed a shot to the low right, which was stopped by a Husker defender for a team save.
- The next shot on goal wouldn't come until the 18th minute when Eleanor Dale put the first one on target for the Huskers. Omaha recorded the save on the attempt.
- In the 20th minute, Zimmers set up for a free kick just outside the top of the box. She placed the ball high in the middle of the goal, but Sam Hauk made another tough save.
- Bourgeois tallied her second shot on goal in the 29th minute. It was the final attempt of the half, and the match was deadlocked 0-0 at the break.
- The Huskers amped up their offensive efforts in the second half recording the first three shots of the game. Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen made her first save of the game on an off-balanced shot from Sarah Weber.
- Grace Thede, Grace Ostergaard, and Bourgeois recorded the next three shots, but all were off target for the Mavericks.
- Omaha's first attempt on goal came in the 82nd minute. Emilie Erland was taken down by Hauk in in box allowing for an Omaha penalty kick. Ostergaard missed high, and it would be the final attempt for the Mavericks in the match which ended in a 0-0 draw.
Inside the Box
- Bourgeois led Omaha with four shots. Two of them were on goal.
- Ostergaard added three shots, while Zimmers tallied two on goal.
- Reedtz logged 90 minutes between the pipes. She made two saves.
- Lauren Schmidt, Morgan Fenton, Lindsey Birch, and Maggie Gunderson all logged their first minutes on the pitch.
- The Mavericks edged the Huskers, 4-2, in shots on goal.
- Omaha also took two more corner kicks than Nebraska, 7-5.
- The attendance of 1,252 is the third highest attended game in the program's history.
