Mavericks Sweep Saturday Action at North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Mavericks swept the opening day of action at North Dakota Saturday afternoon. Omaha shutout the Fighting Hawks, 6-0, in game one. The teams then battled in extra innings in game two. Jamie White struck with a solo homer in the 10th to clinch a 3-2 win.

Omaha improves to 16-11 overall and 5-3 in league play.

GAME ONE: Omaha 6, North Dakota 0
How It Happened:
  • The Mavericks didn't waste time Saturday jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Izzy Eltze singled in the lead-off spot and scored the first run on White's single two at-bats later.
  • Omaha then doubled its lead in the second inning. Olivia Aden got on base after being hit by a pitch. She crossed home on a grounded out by Maggie O'Brien later in the inning.
  • White led off the third with a double to center field and got into scoring position with a single from Lexi Burkhardt. White made it a 3-0 game on an error from UND. It would be 4-0 before the inning ended as Sophie Cerveny's grounded out scored Sydney Ross.
  • Ross recorded her second run of the game with a solo homer in the top of the fifth to lead off the inning.
  • O'Brien, Lynsey Tucker, and White tallied singles in the sixth. White's would plate Eltze for a 6-0 Omaha win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Kamryn Meyer struck out 14 batters in her ninth shutout of the season. It marked her third straight game with at least 10 retired batters. It was one strikeout shy of her career high.
  • The win also marked Meyer's 10th win of the season.
  • Omaha posted 12 hits at the plate.
  • White led the Mavericks going 4-for-4 with a double.
  • Eltze and Ross each tallied a pair of hits. Ross homered, while Eltze doubled to record the other two multi-base hits for Omaha.
  • Ross's homer was her first of the season.

GAME TWO: Omaha 3, North Dakota 2 (10 inn.)
How It Happened:
  • Eltze recorded Omaha's first hit of the game in the top of the third with a double, but she was left stranded as the Mavericks looked for momentum in the second game of Saturday's action.
  • The Fighting Hawks responded with their first run of the day in the bottom of the third. Flann pinch ran for Honig who led off with a walk. Flann scored on Moore's single for a 1-0 UND lead.
  • The Mavericks tied it in the top of the sixth. Ross made it to second after a single and stolen base, while Rachel Weber advanced her to third on a grounded out. Taylor Johnson then stepped up to the plate and batted in Ross with a single. 
  • The game headed to extras, and Omaha found home first. Aden led off with a single and scored the go ahead run on a sac fly from Eltze.
  • The game wasn't over as Pederson homered to left center to tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth.
  • White then matched that in the 10th with a solo homer. Meyer retired the Fighting Hawks in order, and Omaha wins 3-2.

  • Eight Mavericks combined for Omaha's eight hits.
  • Aden finished 1-for-1 at the plate.
  • Burkhardt, Eltze, and White recorded multi-base hits.
