Omaha Rallies for Extra-Innings Road Win

MACOMB, Ill. – Omaha needed a late-game rally to save itself from a third straight Friday loss.

The Mavericks (17-18) trailed struggling Western Illinois (4-30) 2-0 until rallying with a two-run eighth inning and then winning their Summit League series opener by scoring the winning run in the 10th.

Mike Boeve doubled in pinch-runner Tyson Gerdes with one out in the extra frame to give Omaha a 3-2 win in another Friday game in which it struggled offensively. The Mavericks, who lost 1-0 the last two Fridays, were being shut out until Devin Hurdle and Cam Frederick hit consecutive homers in the eighth.

Omaha starter Caleb Riedel had another scoreless outing but pitched only three innings. Joey Machado allowed two runs in his four innings of work, but he ended up with a no-decision after Omaha rallied.

Tyler Mattingley, who pitched two innings in relief, picked up the win.

The Leathernecks, who dropped their seventh straight, outhit the Mavericks 11-7 in the opener.
