For the second straight day, Omaha struggled to get its offense going against Rutgers.
This time, the Scarlet Knights weren't within striking distance for the Mavericks in the late innings.
Rutgers homered three times off the Omaha bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings of its 7-1 win Saturday.
Prior to that, the Mavericks (6-12) and Scarlet Knights (13-4) appeared to be playing a continuation of Friday's series opener at Tal Anderson Filed., which was won 1-0 by Omaha with a walk-off RBI single.
Danny DiGeorgio's run-scoring double in the first off Maverick starter
Charlie Bell (2-2) accounted for the lone run in the game's first five innings. Rutgers starter Brian Fitzpatrick (2-1) tossed six scoreless frames while limiting Omaha to two hits. Bell gave up four in five innings while also walking three.
Evan Sleight doubled the lead for the Scarlet Knights with a two-out homer in the sixth. Garrett Callaghan added a two-run blast shortly after to give Rutgers a 4-0 lead heading into the seventh.
Tony Santa Maria then homered in that inning as the advantage grew to seven.
Four of Omaha's six hits in the game never left the infield.
Sid deMayo walked and scored on
Eduardo Rosario's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give the Mavericks their only run.
The series will be decided on Sunday when the teams meet in the rubber match at 11 a.m.
