Boeve Double Delivers Another Walk-Off Win

Omaha claimed a series win over a Big Ten opponent with its third walk-off victory in eight days.

Mike Boeve's one-out double in the 12th inning scored Drew Reetz from first and pushed the Mavericks past Rutgers 3-2 Sunday at Tal Anderson Field. Omaha had also beaten the Scarlet Knights 1-0 on Friday.

Maverick starter Mark Timmins and relievers Wyatt Sellers and Harrison Kreiling blanked Rutgers over the final 11 innings after the Scarlet Knights (13-5) scored two quick runs. Ryan Lasko, the game's second batter, doubled in a run. Two outs later, Nick Cimillo homered to left field to put Rutgers up 2-0.

Timmins rebounded, however, to retire 15 of the next 16 batters he faced while his team rallied to tie it.

"He gave up two runs in about two minutes, and then he settled in for eight innings," Omaha coach Evan Porter said. "That's stepping up, big time. That's hard to do – to stop the momentum against an offensive team like that."

Timmins struck out five and walked none in eight innings of work. Sellers tossed two scoreless innings, and then Kreiling struck out five after entering with two runners on and no outs in the Rutgers 11th.

Omaha (7-12) got a solo homer from Reetz in the first. Devin Hurdle scored as the Scarlet Knights tried to turn a double play, unsuccessfully, in the fourth. The Mavericks then went scoreless until Boeve's hit.

"The pitching was great on both sides," Boeve said. "[Harrison] had his stuff today. Wyatt had his stuff today. [Timmins] was great. After that first inning, allowing two, we knew we could trust our pitchers to keep throwing up those zeroes. We were just hoping for that breakthrough, and it finally came."

Cam Frederick walked to open the Omaha 12th. Reetz attempted to bunt him over, but Rutgers threw to second in time to force Frederick out. Boeve followed with an opposite-field shot that eluded Lasko, diving left-center field, and rolled to the warning track. Reetz beat an offline throw to the plate.

"Good ole Mike came through," Porter said. "He's a big-time player, and that was a big-time moment."

Boeve's game-winner came two days after Noah Greise's walk-off single in the ninth and a week after Harrison Denk drove in the deciding run against Nebraska. The Mavericks have had four of their last six games decided on the last pitch – two against the Huskers and the two with the Scarlet Knights.

"We've got a lot a work to do, but I think we're on the right path," Porter said. "It's not going to get easier."
