Late Lead Slips Away in Finale at USC

LOS ANGELES – While it left Dedeaux Field without a win Sunday, Omaha gave USC quite a fight.

In fact, the Mavericks stood toe to toe with the program with more national titles than any other for most of their three-game series this weekend. The Trojans have won the College World Series 12 times.

USC is long removed from its last championship, back in 1998. The Trojans finished in a tie for eighth in the preseason poll of Pac-12 coaches. Omaha, meanwhile, was projected third in the Summit League.

Yet, the Mavericks held a 4-2 lead Sunday heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before USC rallied with five consecutive runs to post a 7-4 victory to complete a sweep of a competitive series.

The Trojans (5-2) scored four in the eighth to top Omaha. Trevor Halsema led the inning off with a game-tying home run off Tanner Howe. USC took the lead on a passed ball with runners on the corners. Then D'Andre Smith launched a two-out, two-run triple to give the Trojans their final margin of victory.

Eduardo Rosario staked the Mavericks to an early lead with an RBI double in the first. Omaha made it 3-0 in the third when Eddie Satisky plated a run with a sacrifice fly ahead of a bases-loaded passed ball.

All three runs came off USC starter Jaden Agassi, the son of tennis legends Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.

USC scored twice in the bottom half of that inning to pull back within a run. Maverick starter Caleb Riedel left with a 3-2 advantage after surrendering only four hits and two walks through five innings.

Omaha (2-6) tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Devin Hurdle. The Trojans got it back an inning later on a run-scoring hit by Tyresse Turner. Their decisive four-run frame came shortly after.

Sunday's result was the second close call of the series for the Mavericks, who lost in 12 innings Friday.
