Softball Posts Two Shutouts Friday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Mavericks swept the opening day at the Incarnate Word Tournament Friday. Game one was a 1-0 shutout for Omaha over Boise State. The Mavericks then posted their second straight shutout with a 4-0 win over UIW.
 
Omaha improves to 3-4 overall.

How It Happened
  • Izzy Eltze and Lynsey Tucker led off the game with back-to-back singles to put early pressure on Boise State, but the Broncos escaped unscathed in the inning.
  • Eltze didn't let that stop the Mavericks on her next opportunity reaching first on a walk to start the third inning. She got into scoring position with a steal at second and advanced to third on Tucker's grounded out. Eltze then scored on a sac fly from Lexi Burkhardt to go up 1-0.
  • Kamryn Meyer didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning of Friday's opener, but the Broncos couldn't capitalize. Omaha wins 1-0.

How It Happened
  • Both teams tallied their first hits in the first inning. Eltze led the Mavericks off with another single much like the first game.
  • In the top of the second, Taylor Johnson opened the inning with another single. She set herself up in scoring position, but Omaha couldn't convert for the second straight inning.
  • The Mavericks finally crossed home in the fourth after taking advantage of a fielding error putting Alexa Sedlak at second. Cerveny walked to gain a second base runner. Both would advance on a sac bunt from Maggie O'Brien on the next at-bat.
  • The Eltze and Tucker duo would strike again to plate the pair of base runners. Sedlak put the first on one the board with a single to center, while O'Brien scored on a single to left. Mavericks led 2-0.
  • Omaha added another run in the fifth. Sydney Ross ripped a double to deep center and tallied the third run on a Cerveny single later in the inning.
  • The Mavericks made it 4-0 in the seventh plating another run for insurance. Cerveny tallied one of three hits in the inning and scored on Tuckers single. Omaha wins 4-0.

  • Eltze led Omaha with three hits, while Tucker and Cerveny each tallied two.
  • The Mavericks finished with a season-high 11 hits in the game.
  • Eltze tallied Omaha's lone stolen base.
  • Sydney Nuismer earned her first win in the circle. She recorded six strikeouts.
